The Western Jin Dynasty (265–316 CE) was founded by Sima Yan, who reunified China in 280 CE after the Three Kingdoms period, with its capital initially in Luoyang and later Chang’an. Despite this unification, the dynasty was plagued by internal conflicts, especially the War of the Eight Princes, and external invasions by nomadic groups known as the Five Barbarians. These crises weakened the state, leading to its collapse in 316 CE when Liu Cong's Xiongnu forces captured the last emperor.
