About the empress: Empress Wang was the first wife and empress of Emperor Gaozong during China's Tang dynasty. Born into a distinguished family in Bing Prefecture (modern Taiyuan, Shanxi), she became crown princess in 643 and ascended as empress in 650 following Emperor Gaozong's rise to the throne. Despite her status, Empress Wang did not bear any sons and gradually lost favor to concubines, notably Pure Consort Xiao. In an attempt to regain influence, she recommended Consort Wu (later known as Wu Zetian), a former concubine of Emperor Taizong, to divert the emperor's attention from Consort Xiao. This strategy backfired as Consort Wu gained dominance, leading to Empress Wang's downfall
