The Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279) was the latter half of the Song Dynasty in China, following the fall of the Northern Song to the Jurchen Jin invaders. The dynasty was centered in Hangzhou, south of the Yangtze River, and is known for its economic prosperity, cultural richness, and artistic achievements, despite ongoing military pressure from the north.
During this time, trade flourished, both domestically and overseas, with advancements in navigation, printing, and ceramics. Culturally, the era saw a golden age in landscape painting, poetry, and philosophy, especially the rise of Neo-Confucianism.
The dynasty ended when it was conquered by the Mongols under Kublai Khan, leading to the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty.
