The Qing dynasty (1644–1912 CE) was the last imperial dynasty of China, established by the Manchu people and characterized by a multiethnic empire that expanded Chinese territory to unprecedented extents. This era was marked by significant military conquests, administrative reforms, and a blend of Manchu and Chinese traditions that helped solidify its rule over a vast and diverse population. The Qing dynasty also witnessed notable economic growth, cultural achievements, and increasing interactions with Western powers, setting the stage for the complex challenges of modernity.

Culturally, the Qing dynasty is remembered for its contributions to the arts, literature, and philosophy. The court fostered an environment where traditional Chinese aesthetics merged with Manchu influences, leading to unique developments in painting, ceramics, and architecture. Despite periods of reform and modernization, the dynasty also faced internal strife and external pressures, culminating in a series of conflicts and rebellions that eventually contributed to its downfall in the early 20th century.

Notable empresses left an indelible mark on Qing history through their political influence and cultural patronage. Empress Xiaozhuang, revered as a wise and influential figure, played a key role during the early consolidation of Qing power, helping to guide the empire through critical transitional periods. In the later years, Empress Dowager Cixi emerged as one of the most powerful figures in modern Chinese history, effectively ruling behind the scenes for decades. Her controversial legacy includes both efforts to modernize aspects of the imperial administration and conservative policies that have been widely debated by historians.
