About this empress
Grand Empress Dowager Shangguan (89–37 BCE) became empress at age six, marrying Emperor Zhao of Han, due to her family's powerful political influence. After Emperor Zhao's death, she served as empress dowager and later as grand empress dowager during the reigns of Emperor Xuan and Emperor Yuan. Despite her young age at marriage, she symbolized her family’s dominance in court politics. Her life reflected the complex dynamics of Han court power, where women often became pivotal figures in political struggles.
