About the empress: Empress Wang (personal name unknown; died December 6, 786) was the wife of Emperor Dezong of the Tang dynasty and mother of Emperor Shunzong. She became a consort to Li Kuo (later Emperor Dezong) while he was Prince of Fengjie and gave birth to their eldest son, Li Song, in 761. Favored by Li Kuo, she was granted the title of Shufei, the second-highest rank for imperial consorts, upon his ascension in 779. Empress Wang was known for her loyalty, possibly accompanying Emperor Dezong during his flight from Chang'an amid a mutiny in 783. In 786, as her health declined, Emperor Dezong elevated her to empress on December 3; she passed away three days later. Initially interred separately, her remains were later moved to rest alongside Emperor Dezong after his death in 805.
