About the empresses: Empress Liu (died January 8, 693) was the wife of Emperor Ruizong during China's Tang dynasty. Born into a distinguished family, she became Princess Consort to Li Dan (later Emperor Ruizong) and bore him three children, including Li Chengqi. In 684, when Li Dan ascended the throne, she was named empress, and their son Li Chengqi was appointed crown prince. However, in 690, Empress Dowager Wu (Wu Zetian) usurped the throne, establishing the Zhou dynasty, and demoted Empress Liu to crown princess. In 693, Empress Liu and Consort Dou were falsely accused of witchcraft and executed on Wu Zetian's orders. Their bodies were secretly buried within the palace grounds. After the Tang dynasty was restored, Emperor Ruizong posthumously honored her as Empress Suming.
