About the empress:
Empress Ma (40–79 CE) was the wife of Emperor Ming of the Eastern Han Dynasty and a respected figure in Chinese history. Known for her intellect and humility, she was actively involved in advising her husband on governance and policy. She supported Confucian principles and played a key role in promoting education and the study of classical texts. As empress, she maintained a harmonious court and refrained from engaging in power struggles, which was rare for her time. After Emperor Ming’s death, she became empress dowager and continued to influence the court, ensuring a smooth transition of power.
