About the empress: Empress Xiaoyuan (71 BC–13 CE), born Wang Zhengjun, was a central figure in the Western Han Dynasty as empress, empress dowager, and grand empress dowager. Wife of Emperor Yuan and mother of Emperor Cheng, she wielded significant influence during their reigns and as regent for Emperor Ping. Her family, the Wang clan, rose to power, culminating in her nephew Wang Mang's usurpation of the Han throne to establish the Xin Dynasty. Living to 84, she witnessed both the zenith and downfall of her family’s influence.
