About the empress: Empress Zhang Yan (c. 147–190 CE) was the second wife of Emperor Ling. Known for her intelligence and beauty, she initially gained favor but later faced opposition from court rivals, particularly those aligned with the emperor's other consorts. Despite her position, Empress Zhang wielded limited political influence, as the court was dominated by powerful eunuchs and officials.
