About the Empress
Empress Dou (c. 63–97 CE), formally known as Empress Zhangde ("the polite and virtuous empress"), was a prominent figure during the Eastern Han Dynasty. As the wife of Emperor Zhang, she wielded considerable influence during his reign. Her power grew significantly as empress dowager and regent for her adoptive son, Emperor He, from 88 to 92 CE. Empress Dou’s family, particularly her brother Dou Xian, rose to immense power during her regency, but their dominance ended in 92 CE when Emperor He executed a coup to assert control. Although she lost political power, Empress Dou remained respected and honored until her death, leaving a legacy of both political ambition and resilience.
