About these empresses:
Empress Song (died 82 CE) was the wife of Emperor Zhang of the Eastern Han Dynasty. Known for her intelligence and education, she initially enjoyed the emperor’s favor but fell victim to court intrigues led by her rivals, particularly Consort Liang. Accused of using witchcraft against the emperor, she was deposed and later died in exile. Her life highlights the dangers of court rivalries and the vulnerability of empresses in the Han court.
Empress He (died 189 CE) was the wife of Emperor Ling of the Eastern Han Dynasty and the mother of Emperor Shao. Born into a humble family, she rose to power due to her brother He Jin’s influence in the imperial court. After Emperor Ling’s death, she served as empress dowager and regent for her young son but became entangled in deadly power struggles with eunuchs and warlords.
