About the empresses: Empress Liang Nüying (died 159 CE) was the wife of Emperor Huan of the Eastern Han Dynasty. Known for her beauty, she became empress through her family's political influence, particularly her brother Liang Ji, a powerful general. Despite her status, she was overshadowed by her brother’s dominance and was unpopular for her arrogance and cruelty. After Liang Ji’s downfall, she was deposed and died shortly afterward, marking the end of her family’s control over the court.

Empress Deng Mengnü (died 165 CE) was the wife of Emperor Huan, succeeding Empress Liang. Selected after Liang’s removal, she came from a modest background and lacked political influence. Her reign as empress was short and uneventful, reflecting the declining power of empresses as court politics were increasingly dominated by eunuchs and warlords during the late Eastern Han period.

Empress Dou Miao (died 172 CE) was the wife of Emperor Huan and later the empress dowager during the reign of Emperor Ling. Known for her intelligence and political acumen, she attempted to curb the influence of corrupt eunuchs after Emperor Huan’s death. However, her efforts failed, and she was overthrown by eunuch factions in 172 CE, dying shortly thereafter. Her life reflects the struggles of women attempting to assert power during the chaotic decline of the Eastern Han Dynasty.
